The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is a global not-for-profit organization with a mission of connecting the world of applied geophysics. Founded in 1930, SEG provides information, tools, and resources vital to:
• Advancing the science of exploration geophysics
• Fostering common scientific interests
• Supporting humanitarian efforts
• Accelerating geophysical innovation
Inspiring the geophysicists of today and tomorrow, SEG ‘s long-standing tradition of excellence in education, professional development, new business generation, and engagement cultivates a unique community platform that encourages collaboration and thought leadership for the advancement of geophysical science around the world . Headquartered in Tulsa, OK and with regional offices in Dubai, UAE and Beijing, China, SEG is a global society dedicated to enhancing the present and future of applied geophysics.
With a growing realization amongst the geophysical community that the exchange of
technical ideas and practical experience was lacking, a group of geophysicists resolved to
form a Geophysical Society with its headquarters at Dehradun. As a result,
SPG, India was born on August 15, 1992. The Society was registered
with the Registrar of Societies as a non-profit organization on January 4, 1993.
SPG is presently affiliated to international societies “Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)” USA, European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) - Netherlands & Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (ASEG), Australia. The SPG publishes half yearly technical journal GEOHORIZONS, which contains technical papers, case studies and activities of the various regional and student chapters.
At present the society has ten regional chapters, including one overseas in North America, 16 student chapters , all in India , in which the SPG BHU Student Chapter was awarded “The Best Chapter Award” in 2020 at Kochi. And there is a total membership of around 2600 which includes Life, Annual & Student memberships.
SPG in its relentless efforts to share the ideas and experiences to the geo-scientific community organizes lectures, workshops, technical talks and field trips at various levels. All regional and student chapters go hand in hand with the central executive body to complete the “mission focus” towards achieving technical excellence.
