Geophysics Department

Banaras Hindu University

The Department of Geophysics is actively engaged in quality research besides offering a six semester (three year) post-graduate degree course leading to M.Sc. (Tech.) Geophysics Degree, in both the specializations, viz., Exploration Geophysics and Meteorology. Besides pursing researches (theoretical as well as observational), in various disciplines of geophysics and carrying out field investigation, Department offers consultancy services to interested agencies.
Researches are being carried out mainly in the following thrust areas:
i. Geo-electromagnetic and Magnetotellurics ;
ii. Ground water Geophysics; water resources ;
iii. Non-linear dynamics , fractal dynamics and modelling;
iv. Site response and seismic microzonation ; seismic hazards assesments;
v. Tectonics of crustal features
vi. Numerical weather prediction;
vii. Energetics of monsoon & monsoon variability
viii. Climate change and its impact on social sectors;
ix. Agricultural meteorology and advisory services
x. Aerosols and radiation

In addition to the active research , the department collaborates with india Meteorological Department, Govt. of India, in maintaining a Weather observatory, a Seismology observatory & an ozone unit and, with central Ground water Board for collection of primary database.

Facilities:

A number of Geophysical laboratories, namely Meteorological laboratory , seismic
Laboratory , Geo-electrical and Electromagnetic laboratories houses instruments and equipments like worden Gravimeter; Proton Precession magnetometer; Resistivity Meter (DDR 4 type); DFS iv seismic equipment ; water quality analyser (Spectroquant); Stereoscope Terrameter, etc. Recently a 5-user GIS software (ERDAS) is also installed in the laboratory for research and academic activities.
For easy access of books and journals to the students and staff, the department also has a departmental library, which has collection of relevant text books, journals theses, etc. Apart from physical library facility, internet connected PCs in the computer laboratory provides virtual library through INFLIBNET, and access to journals through various portals.
