CONCEPT & PURPOSE

Department is to start a magazine “Geo Imaginations” in March 2011 as a tribute to Mahamana on his 150 Birth Anniversary.

The purpose is to provide a medium of expression to the people belonging to the department and to promote geophysics and to aware the students about new developments in the geophysics field.

The motto is to invoke the hidden talents in students and to spread the activities happening in the department and thoughts of the people of the department to the outside world.

DETAILS

There will be two versions of the magazine “Geo Imaginations”, which will be an annual magazine, one hard copy issue and other will be an online version.

The magazine may contain geophysical articles, tour/training reports, research papers and literal articles.

Deva Ghosh obtained a B.S. in geology and physics and an M. Sc in geophysics from Banaras University India and a Ph.D. (1970) from Delft University, Netherlands.  His research solved complex Bessel and Hankel integrals with the help of fast convolution filters and is widely applied in electrical prospecting.

He worked for Shell for a quarter century (1974–1999) where he was involved in early research on prestack depth migration and other novel applications of 3D seismic. This includes orthogonal 3D surveys at Bullwinkle in the GOM and converted-wave seismology in the southern U.S. He later shifted his focus to bright spot and AVO applications.

Ghosh joined PETRONAS in 2000 and is responsible for research, development, and application of state-of-the-art geophysical technology worldwide. He is passionate about geophysics, about developing local staff, and transfer of technology.

He is a member of AAPG, SPE, EAGE and SEG, and a former editor of EAGE

The Department of Geophysics at Banaras Hindu University, established in 1949, is one of the oldest pioneering centres of geophysical education in the country. Presently, the Department offers a three-year course in Geophysics leading to M.Sc. (Tech.) Geophysics degree with specialization in Exploration Geophysics and Meteorology. The Department is actively engaged in teaching of updated courses in Exploration Geophysics and Meteorology to post graduate students, in pursuing researches – theoretical and observational in various fields of Geophysics, in carrying out field investigations and collaborative work with different organizations and in offering consultancy services to interested agencies. It is a matter of great pride for all of us that India Today–Neilson Survey team has ranked our University as number ONE amongst top 50 Indian Universities and the achievement of Geophysics Department has got a special mention in that.

The Department of Geophysics has successfully completed its 60 years of glorious services to the Nation and Human Society in various ways. It is our bounden duty to hold the Diamond Jubilee Celebration (1949-2009) along with International Conference on Geophysical Sciences – Energy, Climate Change and Evolution of Human Society (ICON GSECCES-2010) during December 21-23, 2010. We have reached to a milestone where the Alumni of the Department working in various capacities at different centres in India and abroad should feel proud and come forward to support the organizer for celebrating the Diamond Jubilee in an excellent way. The entire function will be dedicated to 150th Birth Anniversary year of the great visionary and the founder Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji.
It is tentatively proposed to honour some distinguished Alumni and institute a Diamond Jubilee Medal in BHU to be awarded every year to the student standing First in M.Sc.(Tech.) Geophysics Examination. Further, depending upon the collection of funds, other future programmes like construction of Diamond Jubilee Hall, institution of Research Fellowships etc. could also be charted out.
We, therefore, make an earnest appeal to all our Alumni to contribute generously in order to make the celebration successful and memorable. We always need your support and cooperation, which will go a long way in strengthening and supporting the vision of Mahamana Ji for Alumni-Alma Mater interaction.
